Wine Tour Forever

We started early from Plaza de los Luceros in Alicante. A minibus of Transports Ríos was waiting for us there with one of his drivers, Pedro, a lovely human being.

After waiting a little bit for Arancha, one of the receptionists of Hotel Husa Golf, we began our trip to the region of Vinalopó Medio to live a new Sunday adventure.

This trip was very interesting because we mixed up business travel with pleasure and also different nationalities and languages.

I would like to introduce you to the group:

First of all we have Maite and Arancha, part of the fabulous team of the Hotel Husa Golf in San Juan Beach. Then we have Nuria and José Antonio, sales manager and her companion from the lovely Hotel Albahía in La Albufereta. Sven, Trin and Lauri were our friendly visitors from Estonia and Alanna and Marcin, residents in Holland but born in England and Poland, also very nice people.

Without being too prideful I would like to say that we were a really good bunch of people, dynamic, chatty, friendly and with very good vibrations. Travelling with people like this is a pleasure, thanks to all of you!

The bus trip was nice and quiet until Hondón de las Nieves where we stopped and visited the village for a little while. Then we carried on to la Algueña and just before we got there, we stopped to admire the countryside and see the shocking marble quarry next to the town. We also took advantage of being here on harvest season and tried fresh Monastrell grapes as we wanted to try them before we tried the wines made with it.

Nuria was surprised with the small size of the grapes. She took a picture of them on her hand so she could appreciate the size of them in one picture. I liked the idea so I took a picture of her hand. You can see this and more pictures in our Picasa album.

Grapes were really sweet. You could tell they had on many hours of sunlight… 

We carried on to the winery where we visited its facilities and we did the wine tasting. Tried its wines; white, rose, red, Fondonet and Fondillón (you can see the names of them in another post in this blog). We enjoyed all these Mediterranean flavours accompanied by some delicious “coca de aceite” from Algueña. Half of the way through the wine tasting you could feel how countries, cultures and languages were starting to melt.

When we finished we went to the Sunday market. It is a shame they were closing but even then we had the time to buy a few things.

We tried the tipical “salazones” of Alicante; “hueva” and “mojama”. Our foreign visitors loved the “mojama” but not the “hueva” so much…difficult to believe for me because I love it!

We also tried different types of seasoned olives and some pickled garlics that “did not taste like garlic”, as Maite was explaining Nuria because she did not want to try them.

Sven, Trin and Lauri were interested in the artichokes as they can not see them in their country… oh my, what would I do without artichokes! We bought one and I showed them how to peel it so they could have a go and cook something with artichokes.

We missed the cure meets. A shame as Alanna and Marcin were specially interested in this. And the thing was that our friend Alberto from the local butchers was closed and we could not visit him.

Once we smelt, touched and tasted all these local delicatessen, we went to the restaurant to eat a fantastic paella rice. Carlos and Miguel; very well done that rice with rabbit and escargots! And we also had “gachamiga”, fried cheese and “capellanes” with tomato salad. A delicious banquet as some of them told me later on.

Moreover we celebrated something, yes, it was Marci´s birthday! We sang a very funny version of the happy birthday song that made him smile and he also had a little cake with some candles.

I don´t know who started this (I think it was José Antonio with his brilliant ideas) but for a second we imagined we stayed around this area to make the wine tour longer. We imagined we left off our lives and we embarked a gastronomic adventure, from village to village, from winery to winery, travelling and trying its wines and food. Dedicating our lives only to the pleasure of the senses… This sounds like a new trip here!

Ok, this is the end of this post. I talk too much. Thanks to all of you that came to this trip for making this experience something unique. A trip to remember for the rest of the days.

Salimos tempranito desde Plaza de los Luceros en Alicante. Un autobús de Autocares Ríos nos estaba esperando allí con uno de sus conductores, Pedro, un encanto de persona humana…

Tras esperar unos minutitos a Arancha, una de las recepcionistas dicharacheras del Hotel Husa Golf nos pusimos rumbo al Vinalopó Medio, a vivir una nueva aventura de domingo.

Esta salida estuvo muy curiosa pues combinamos viaje de negocios con viaje de placer, además de diversas nacionalidades e idiomas.

Os presentamos a los participantes:

Para empezar os presento a Maite y Arancha, que forman parte del estupendo equipo del Hotel Husa Golf Playa de San Juan. Después tenemos a Nuria y Jose Antonio, jefa de ventas y acompañante del Hotel Albahía en la Albufereta. Sven, Trin y Lauri una gente majísima de Estonia y por último a Alanna y a Marcin, residentes en Holanda pero inglesa y polaco de origen.

No es por nada, pero formábamos un grupo muy bueno, gente dinámica, habladora, simpática y con muy buenas vibraciones. Así da gusto viajar, muchas gracias a todos!

El viaje fue tranquilo hasta Hondón de las Nieves donde paramos y visitamos el pueblo brevemente. Continuamos hacia la Algueña y antes de llegar, paramos para admirar un poco el paisaje agreste y sorprendernos con la “mole” de cantera que se avista desde esa carretera. También aprovechamos que estamos en la temporada, para probar un poquito cómo sabe la uva monastrell fresca, antes de ser procesada para hacer vino.

A Nuria le sorprendió el que eran muy pequeñas, así que tomó una foto de las uvas en su mano para poder apreciar en la foto su tamaño real. Me gustó la idea y yo le hice una foto también. La podéis ver en el álbum dePicasa dedicado al viaje.

La uva estaba dulcísima. Se nota que ya lleva muchas horas de sol encima…

Continuamos hasta la bodega en donde visitamos las instalaciones y realizamos la cata.

En la cooperativa nos tratan muy bien. Cada vez que los visitamos tienen un detalle. Esta vez nos habían preparado un ramo de flores en el centro de la mesa precioso y además habían decorado la sala con varios rollers chulos de los vinos de la Algueña. Muchas gracias Paco! Sois encantadores!

Probamos los caldos; blanco, rosado, tinto doble pasta, Fondonet y Fondillón (tenéis los nombres en algún otro post del vino en este blog). Disfrutamos de estos sabores mediterráneos acompañados por esa deliciosa coca de aceite alguereña. A mitad de los vinos la interacción entre países, culturas e idiomas se iba haciendo de notar.

Al terminar nos fuimos al mercado de domingos en el pueblo. Una pena que estaban cerrando, pero aún así pudimos comprar alguna cosa.

Probamos los salazones típicos de Alicante; hueva de atún y mojama. A nuestros visitantes extranjeros la mojama les encantó, pero la hueva la encontraron más difícil de pelar… con lo que a mi me gusta!

También probamos varios tipos de olivas aliñadas y unos ajos en vinagre “que no saben a ajo”, como Maite le explicaba a Nuria, pues esta última no quería probarlos.

Sven, Trin y Lauri estaban interesados por las alcachofas, pues allí en su país no hay… ay madre que haría yo sin alcachofas!! Compramos una y con ayuda del cuchillo del verdulero, les hice una demostración de cómo se pela una alcachofa, para que prueben a cocinarla algún día.

Nos faltaron los embutidos. Una pena pues Alanna y Marcin estaban especialmente interesados en estos. Y es que nuestro amigo Alberto, de la carnicería San José ya había cerrado y no pudimos pasar a verlo.

Una vez olidos, tocados y degustados todos estos manjares de la zona, partimos hacia el restaurante de Ángela a comer un arrocito rico, rico. Carlos y Miguel; ole, que ole ese arroz con caracole!!! Y la gachamiga también y el queso del carche y los capellanes con tomate. Una delicia como me comentaban después algunos miembros del grupo.

Además celebramos un cumpleaños! Sí, era el cumple de Marcin. Le cantamos el cumpleaños feliz de Parchís y se puso muy contento.

No sé cómo salió el tema (yo creo que fue Jose Antonio con una de esas ideas buenas suyas), pero por un momento nos imaginamos que nos quedábamos por esos lares para hacer la ruta del vino más larga. Nos imaginamos que en ese mismo momento, rompíamos con la rutina de cada uno y nos embarcábamos en una aventura gastronómica, de pueblo en pueblo, de bodega en bodega, viajando y probando sus caldos y su gastronomía. Dedicando nuestras vidas única y exclusivamente al placer de los sentidos..Esto suena a próximo viaje!

Bueno este es el final de la crónica que me enrollo mucho. A todos los asistentes mil gracias por hacer de nuestros viajes algo único. Una experiencia a recordar para el resto de los días.

Raquel, Ronaldiño and Lolita in Alicante

Ron and Rachel where coming to Alicante to visit Ron´s parents. They came aaaaaall the way from New York, the city of lights and many other things (more than 6000 km away!).

They were interested in doing a wine tour, to get to know the local wines and Alicante´s country side. We arranged to do this and we offered them to take a trial-tapas Tour in Alicante city. They liked this idea so our first meeting was Alicante´s “lovely” (1) new casino.

On this tour, we did an orientation walk around the city centre to see some of the interesting places Alicante offers and talk a bit about the history of Alicante. Then we visited various popular bars/restaurants, where we had a taste of the local tapas.  We wanted to finish the design of this new tapas tour in Alicante (available now in our web).

Rachel and Ron discovered many new flavours and dishes they had never tried before, accompanied by a beer or two and a lovely wine that Jaime, the owner in Lo Nuestro Restaurant, offered us.

The tapas we chose were brave like; sangre (blood pudding with onion sauce), ensaladilla rusa (potato, tuna, veggies & mayo salad), pericana alicantina (dish made with the skin of the cod fish and garlic), calamares a la romana (calamari), pepito de ternera (pork medallions in bread&butter). They loved them all (pretty much) although Ron did not like the tiny prawns.

In three hours we had plenty of food and drink and they went home happy and ready to have a “Spanish siesta”. We arranged to meet up for the wine tour the following day.

Next day, we woke up early in the morning and started our trip to la Algueña, our favourite place of this month. We left from Villamartin, a place unknown by us up until today, and Rachel, Ron and his mum Lily, let the adventure began…

As they were staying near Torrevieja, our itinerary to Algueña was different. We took the A7 direction Catral, San Isidro & Albatera. As we passed Albatera we started to climb up a mountain. We did not expect this. It was a beautiful area that made the contrast between the coastal villages and Hondon´s Valley even more interesting. Very nice this way by the way.

We made our usual stop to see the quarry El Monte Coto and tried some of the grapes in one of the vineyards. They were almost ready but still a little bit green.

Once in la Algueña, we stopped to buy some “coca de aceite”, a special savoury bread similar to Italian focaccia, that goes really well with the wine tasting. We normally park the car in front of a house that has a green wooden door. This house is special and we discovered why on this trip…

When we stopped, the door opened and two men came out of the house. They were opening the doors wide open so the light could come into the house to take some pictures. It was a blacksmith´s house. They greeted us with a wide smile in their faces, we returned the greeting and ask them what were they doing in there. A documentary. A local newspaper was interested in this old profession and wanted to take some pictures. This place seemed to be out of a medieval film. A fireplace to heat the iron or steel, an old anvil and hammer, many different tools to work these metals of all sorts and ages…

The blacksmith (a “monument-alive” as his friend was calling him) was very friendly with us (as it is common for people of Algueña) and invited us to take some pictures with them.

This was a surprise for all of us and an extra spontaneous value to this trip. Nothing like our New York visitors could find in their home town.

Delighted with the beauty of travelling, we carried on to the winery where Paco and Cristina (our wonderful hostesses) waited for us to show us all the facilities and to taste their lovely wines.

We did the visit and the tasting that everyone liked. With some wine in our stomachs we started giggling and saying silly things. For example we changed all our visitor´s names. Ron was Ronaldiño, Rachel was Raquel in Spanish and Lily, Lolita. We didn´t stop here and we also had names for their relatives that were not here; Allan was Alancito, Jane was Juanita and Jo, become Pepito.

With these giggles and fooling around a bit more we finished the visit and went to the village to walk around for a bit and then we went for lunch to a local restaurant where we had a taste of the different local dishes.

Again, a lovely day out accompanied by very friendly people that finished this tour, once again, with a smile in their faces and wanting a “Spanish siesta” very much.

Note (1): From here we would like to state that we do not like Alicante´s casino at all. It spoils the charming views of the harbour. Can we not take the horrible neon lights away please?

Rachel y Ron venían a Alicante para visitar a los padres de Ron. Volaron desde Nueva York, nada más y nada menos, ciudad que se encuentra a más de 6000 km de Alicante.

Estaban interesados en hacer una ruta del vino, para conocer los vinos de la zona y también las zonas rurales de la provincia. Reservamos la ruta del vino y además les ofrecimos hacer una ruta de tapas por Alicante que estábamos probando. Les gustó la idea, así que nuestro primer punto de encuentro fue en el “precioso”(1) casino nuevo de Alicante.

En esta Ruta de Tapas, primero caminamos un poco por la ciudad conociendo lugares interesantes y hablando un poco de la historia de la ciudad y después visitamos varios bares conocidos de cocina de mercado, lugares que estábamos probando para hacer el ya nombrado Tour de Tapas (que ya podéis ver por cierto en nuestra web).

El caso es que Rachel y Ron, descubrieron muchos nuevos sabores y platos diferentes, acompañados de alguna cervecita y un vino de Alicante que, Jaime el dueño del Restaurante Lo Nuestro, nos dio y que estaba rico, rico.

En tres horas nos pusimos las botas y ellos regresaron a casa felices y listos para una “Spanish siesta”. En ese momento quedamos para el próximo día, realizar la ruta del vino.

La siguiente mañana, fresquitos y recién levantados, nos pusimos de camino a la Algueña, nuestro lugar favorito del mes, para hacer la visita a la bodega y la cata de los caldos de Alicante. Salimos desde Villamartin (lugar desconocido para nosotros hasta este momento) y además de Ron y Rachel, nos acompañó Lily, la madre de Ron.

Como estaban alojados cerca de Torrevieja, nuestra ruta a la Algueña fue diferente. Tomamos la A7 dirección Catral, San Isidro y Albatera. Al pasar Albatera, comenzamos a subir montaña. Esto no nos lo esperábamos. Subimos como un pequeño puerto de montaña cercano a Serralba. Una zona muy bonita que marcó todavía más el contraste de la zona costera, tan urbanizada y en-ladrillada por todas partes, y el valle de Hondón de los Frailes, lleno de cultivos de todo tipo, bosques y montañas. Muy chulo este camino.

Hicimos la parada habitual para ver la cantera del Monte Coto, probamos un poco de uva de unos viñedos cercanos (sólo cojimos un racimito pequeño para todos! ) y continuamos la ruta.

Una vez en la Algueña paramos para comprar una coca deaceite (vamos a mencionar que todavía no lo hemos hecho la riquísima coca de aceite que hacen aquí en la Algueña y que es ideal para hacer la cata de vinos, normalmente vamos a la panadería San Juan, en donde Bárbara nos atiende siempre de maravilla). En esta paradita que hacemos, el vehículo estaciona siempre en la puerta de una casa de la Algueña que es especial y en esta ruta descubrimos porque…

Al parar la puerta verde se abrió y de allí salieron dos hombres “del poble” que estaban abriendo las puertas de par en par para hacer unas fotos de lo que había dentro: una herrería antigua. Enseguida nos saludaron, saludo que fue devuelto y nos interesamos por lo que estaban haciendo; un documental sobre la herrería y su dueño, el herrero del pueblo. El lugar parecía sacado de un cuento de la época medieval. Una forja de carbón, un yunque con un martillo, tenazas y moldes, herramientas de todo tipo y de todas las épocas…

El herrero (un monumento viviente, como le llamaban sus amigos) nos invitó muy amablemente, como les caracteriza a las gentes de la Algueña, a pasar para hacernos unas fotos y acordarnos de este momento para siempre.

Fue toda una sorpresa y un añadido espontáneo del viaje muy interesante. Nada de lo que nuestros visitantes new yorquinos podían encontrar en su ciudad de origen.

Encantados de la vida seguimos rumbo a la bodega en donde nos esperaban Paco y Cristina, nuestros grandes anfitriones de esta cooperativa.

Realizamos la visita y la cata, que les encantó a todos. Con los vinitos en el cuerpo nos iba entrando la tontería y comenzamos a cambiarnos los nombres. A Ron le pusimos Ronaldiño, a Rachel, Raquel, a Lily, Lolita y para los que no estaban, familiares de los asistentes, también teníamos nombres nuevos: Allan tú serás Alancito, Jane, tu nuevo nombre en Alicante es Juanita y Jo, tú serás Pepito.

Entre risas y cachondeo terminamos la visita, dimos una vuelta por el pueblo y después nos fuimos a comer los platos típicos de la zona.

De nuevo un día muy agradable, entre gente muy simpática y dicharachera que terminaron la visita con unas ganas enormes de hacer, de nuevo, una “Spanish siesta” como toca.

Nota (1) Desde aquí queremos hacer constar que no nos gusta nada el aspecto del casino nuevo de Alicante. Le quita todo el encanto que el puerto tenía antes de que fuera construido. ¿Por favor, no podemos eliminar esas luces de neon horribles de la fachada?

Wine vs Norway

This September we have been visiting La Algueña very often. We had some visitors from different parts of the world; Norway, New York, London, San Gabriel… 

For example we had the pleasure to meet Heidi and Silje from Norway. They heard about us in the Hotel Tryp Ciudad Alicante. They chose to do the wine tour.

Heidi/Silje, in this Blog site you can read about this trip (have a look at other posts with the tag “wine tour”), so you can remember this day out and also remember the names of places and things we did. 

I´d like to remind you some of these things, so you have the references to tell your friends and relatives: 

First we went to Hondón de las Nieves (do you remember the story about the virgin of the Snow?) to wonder a bit around the village and walk up to the church´ square, from where we could see all the valley. Then we visited Bodegas Cerdá briefly so you could see this wine shop and perhaps find something interesting there. 

We then went to la Algueña, to the cooperative winery. There we saw all the procedure to make wine, from the first step when big tracks brought the grapes to the winery to the end, when wine is ready to be consumed.

In our Picasa web site you can see some pictures of this. 

We tried the following wines: White wine Torre Viñas and Rosé. The red wine “Tinto doble pasta”, Fondonet (the red sweet quirky wine) and the marvellous Fondillón, the star of the house. I also bought for you some “coca de aceite” (focaccia bread) with sausage to go with the wines. 

After the visit we went to the village centre to see the church and feel the quiet atmosphere of this small village in the afternoon. We visited the butchery San José, where we tried different cured meats like lomo, chorizo and the sobreasada (meat pate with paprika that you liked very much). 

At the restaurant we had different local specialities. The “gachamiga”, which was the dish that looked like a Spanish potato omelette, made with flour, olive oil, garlic and spring onions. The rice made with chicken, salad and assorted desserts. 

Finally we went back to Alicante via Pinoso and saw the Cabezón de la Sal.

Este septiembre hemos estado viajando mucho a la Algueña. Nos han visitado de lugares diferentes; Noruega, Nueva York, Londres, San Gabriel…

Por ejemplo tuvimos el placer de conocer a Heidi y Silje de Noruega que vinieron del Hotel Tryp Ciudad Alicante.

Con ellas hicimos la excursión de la ruta del vino. Heidi/Silje, en este blog podéis leer acerca de este viaje (mirar otras entradas con la etiqueta ruta del vino), para que así os acordéis de los lugares y cosas que conocisteis.

Os recuerdo algunas cosas para que tengáis la referencia:

Primero paramos en Hondón de las Nieves (¿recordáis la historia de la Virgen de las Nieves?) para dar una pequeña vuelta por le pueblo y subir a la plaza de la iglesia, desde donde se puede admirar el valle de Hondón. Visitamos Bodegas Cerdá brevemente por si os apetecía comprar o ver alguna cosa y continuamos hasta la Algueña.

En la cooperativa de vinos, vimos todo el proceso de elaboración del vino. Al estar en vendimia, pudimos ver cómo se fabrican los caldos, desde que los tractores traen la uva recién recogida, hasta que lo embotellan.

Probamos los vinos: Torre Viñas Blanco y Rosado, el tinto doble pasta, el Fondonet (el vino tinto dulce tan especial) y el Fondillón (la estrella de la casa). También os compre un poquito de coca de aceite, típica de la Algueña para acompañar a los vinos.

Después de la visita fuimos al centro del pueblo para ver la plaza de la iglesia y respirar la tranquilidad de un pueblo a medio día. Visitamos la carnicería San José, en donde probamos distintos embutidos y la sobreasada, que os gustó mucho.

Ya en el restaurante comimos varias cosas típicas de aquí. La gachamiga, que es como una especie de tortilla hecha con harina, aceite, ajos y ajos tiernos. El arroz con conejo, ensalada y un variado de postres.

Por último regresamos a Alicante por Pinoso, para ver el Cabezón de la Sal.

Desde aquí os damos las gracias por viajar con nosotros y esperamos veros de nuevo en Alicante algún día.

The Irish songs & Alicante´s Wines

And we are back again at the wine tour in Alicante, this time with two lovely couples from Ireland that enjoyed the day with us visiting this charming part of Alicante province called "Vinalopó Medio".

In this ocassion we had the chance to see one of the cave houses in La Algueña. We were at nearly 40C outside but inside one of this houses the temperature was no more than 22C... You need to sleep with a blanket even in the summer! Amazing!

We also meet some of the locals, one of them a retired policeman that told us a funny joke and explained many things about his life.

It was a good experience, finishing the day with some Irish songs in the car making the jorney back home more pleasant... :)

Thanks to Laura, Nick, Laura and Keith for being interested in our culture and way of life. We hope you return to Alicante soon.

Y volvemos a la ruta del vino esta vez con dos parejas de Irlanda que nos acompañaron a visitar esta parte de la provincia de Alicante llamada comarca del Vinalopó Medio.

En esta ocasión tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar una de las muchas casas cueva que existen en La Algueña. En la calle estabamos a casi 40 grados, pero al entrar en esta bonita casa la temperatura bajó a unos 22C... En esta casa necesitan una mantita para dormir hasta en los meses de verano! Increible!

Conocimos a algún lugareño, uno de ellos un policía retirado muy divertido que nos contó un chiste de mondarse y muchas cosas acerca de su vida.

Pasamos un día muy divertido, finalizando con algunas canciones irlandesas en el coche de camino a casa.

Gracias a Laura, Nick, Laura y Keith por viajar con nosotros e interesarse por la cultura y la forma de vida alicantinas. Esperamos que volváis pronto a Alicante.

Wine Tour and Mark´s Stag Weekend

Yesterday we went out again to our Wine Tour, this time with 11 very special visitors, coming all the way from England (various places) and celebrating a very special occasion: Mark´s Wedding.

Pickup at 9.30am in Complejo Mont Royal in San Juan, Alicante. We couldn’t tell Mark where we were going until we started talking about wine and he worked all out…

We had a really good day out, enjoying the scenery, the food and of course the wine from this little region of Alicante.

As a proper Stag Weekend the boys kept doing funny little games. One of this games I did not understand to start with, they were holding a strange little white thing in their hands up… perhaps one of them can explain us…

We finished the day in a lovely little restaurant near La Algueña. I think the group enjoyed the meal but had preferred more meat and less veggies. If we had known in advance… we were expecting a different type of travel group.. ;)

Ayer salimos de nuevo a realizar nuestra Ruta del Vino, esta vez con 11 visitantes muy especiales, llegados de Reino Unido (de varios lugares) y que celebraban una ocasión muy especial: la boda de Marcos.

Recogida a las 9.30am en el Complejo Mont Royal de San Juan, Alicante. No podíamos contarle a Marcos qué íbamos a hacer en el día de hoy, pero una vez que comenzamos a hablar de vinos.. descubrió todo el pastel…

Pasamos un día estupendo, disfrutando del paisaje, la comida y por supuesto el vino de esta pequeña región alicantina.

Como buena despedida de solteros, los chicos hacían todo tipo de juegos para molestar al novio. Uno de ellos no se entendía muy bien; tenían que aguantar una pequeña cosa extraña blanca en la mano… quizás alguno de ellos nos lo pueda explicar…

Acabamos el día en un pequeño restaurante encantador cercano a La Algueña. Pienso que el grupo disfrutó con la comida, aunque creo que hubieran preferido tomar más carne y menos verduras.. si hubiéramos sabido cuales eran sus preferencias por adelantado…

The Wine Tour / La Ruta del Vino

This weekend we did one of our tours: The wine tour and the waterfalls of the Vinalopó.

We went to a village called “La Algueña” where we went to a winery to taste lovely wines and learn more about this fascinating drink.

On the way we enjoyed the scenery and saw some curious things like different quarries around the area. We were overwhelmed by a marble quarry very close to la Algueña, most commonly called “The waterfalls of the Vinalopó”. It is named like this because it looks like a big waterfall, like the ones in Niagara or Iguazú in north and south America.

Once in the winery we tried different wines like Torreviñas white wine, Torreviñas Lágrima Rosado (Rose), or red Crianza Casa Jiménez, also the ecological red wine (very good by the way) and the not so common wine Fondonet, a variety of the famous Fondillón wine, wine of kings and world wide known.

In this humble winery they treated us like we were old friends, one of the owners showed us all the machines and systems to make wine, giving us a fantastic explanation about the whole process of wine-making and answering all our questions. A very recommendable visit.

After that, we walked around the village of Algueña (this time we did not have time to go to the market) but we had the chance to try the famous “embutidos” or cured meets very popular in this area and a delicatessen you have got to try if you eat meat.

Finally we went to a very good local restaurant, in the small village of Cañada de la Leña (very close to la Algueña but it belongs to Murcia). There we had an amazing 3 hours lunch with all sorts of typical Spanish dishes (not only Spanish but traditional dishes of this area); local cheese from the mountains near by, escargots with a lovely mild spicy sauce, salad and grilled fresh veggies, “gachas migas” with spring onions and an amazing escargot and rabbit paella (paella de conejo y caracoles).

Then we had some desserts and to drink more wine of this region. The most important thing though was the sweet company and interesting conversation.

We finished the day very satisfied and with a nice feeling of having met new and very nice people and having discovered new places and experiences in this part of our beautiful province of Alicante.

Este fin de semana realizamos una de las rutas que mandarinablue propone en la provincia de Alicante: La Ruta del vino y las cataratas del Vinalopó.

Nos dirigimos a la localidad de la Algueña. Por el camino disfrutamos del paisaje y observamos algunos elementos curiosos como son las canteras que se dan en varios puntos de la zona, quedando boquiabiertos con la cantera de mármol “crema marfil” del Monte Coto, situado a pocos metros del pueblo de la Algueña. Dichas canteras se conocen en la zona como las “Cataratas del Vinalopó”, nombre que han recibido al parecerse desde la distancia a una gran catarata blanca, tan majestuosa (aunque no tan agradable a la vista ni al medio ambiente) como las cataratas de Iguazú en Argentina.

Ya en la bodega, degustamos vinos como el Torreviñas Blanco, Torreviñas Lágrima Rosado, el Crianza Casa Jiménez, el Tinto ecológico (muy bueno por cierto) y el poco común vino Fondonet, extraordinario vino dulce para acompañar aperitivos y pastas dulces.

En esta bodega, nos trataron como si fuéramos amigos de toda la vida, uno de los propietarios nos enseñó las instalaciones para el proceso y fabricación del vino, dándonos una explicación fantástica de todo el proceso y contestando a todas nuestras preguntas. Una visita muy recomendable para probar estos vinos alicantinos, que aunque no son los más comercializados ni populares entre paladares exquisitos, tienen el sabor y el carácter de esta tierra recia y rural.

Esta visita la disfrutamos mucho todos los excursionistas y os la recomendamos por su autenticidad y enfoque rural y local que tiene. Sobre todo porque los cooperativistas de la bodega de la Algueña, se han empeñado en producir vinos exclusivamente con las uvas de la comarca y siguiendo métodos tradicionales.

Después paseamos un poco por el pueblo de la Algueña, y visitamos una carnicería muy conocida en el pueblo donde probamos algunos embutidos típicos de la zona y pudimos comprar productos elaborados artesanalmente.

Finalmente nos dirigimos a un restaurante muy conocido en la zona, en la pedanía de Cañada de la Leña (cercano a la Algueña, pero perteneciente a la provincia de Murcia) y allí nos dieron de comer por 3 horas! Todo lo que probamos eran platos y productos típicos de la zona: queso del valle del Carche, caracoles picantones, ensaladas y verduras a la plancha, gachas migas con ajetes (impresionantes!) y por último, antes del postre por supuesto, un arroz con caracoles y conejo para chuparse los dedos.

Postres variados a compartir (no nos cabía nada más en el estómago), café y una conversación y compañía muy agradables.

De beber, afortunadamente pudimos probar uno de los vinos locales algueñeros como es el Medi Natural, procesado en la bodega de la Algueña y de edición limitada (pertenece a un vecino de la Algueña que produce este vino ecológico en cantidades muy pequeñas, para su familia, amigos y algún restaurante de la zona).

No hace falta decir que acabamos el día satisfechos y habiendo pasado un agradable día de domingo, conociendo a gente nueva y explorando lugares y sabores de este rincón bello y particular de nuestra provincia alicantina.
